Conservation Biology Summer School in Greece - 2012

The Greek Summer School registration is open for undergrads and grads!

The Greek Summer School as an  Erasmus IP school 2012, the 5th in the series, is open to undergraduate students from the five Universities from Greece, Denmark, Germany, Italy and UK involved in the Erasmus IP programme.  A total of 15 students will be selected on a competitive basis.

Furthermore, this year the Erasmus IP in collaboration with European Section of the the Society for Conservation Biology  invites three more students from all over Europe, including Turkey to apply. SCB-students will recieve the course for free, but they shoud cover accomodation, health insurace and travel expenses on their own.

The course targets undergraduate students mainly. However, it is open not only to undergraduate students, but also to graduate students, or early post-graduate students. PhD candidates should not apply, as the course might be too introductory for this academic level.

SCB Chapter in Hungary is registered

Following the launch of the SCB-ES Chapter Initiative in the autumn of 2011, the Hungarian SCB Chapter  has been successfully registered in January 2012. The Chapter aims to organize a series of different meetings, workshops and conferences of conservation biologists and conservation professionals in Hungary. Activities will embrace and continue the work of the already well-established organizing committee of the Hungarian Conference for Conservation Biology (HCCB) (www.mtbk.hu).

Through the Chapter Initiative the SCB Europe Section  intends to facilitate and encourage the establishment of SCB chapters in Europe to promote more local commitment for the sake of European biodiversity. Such chapters will be particularly crucial in Europe due to our diversity of languages and approaches – especially as conservation practice in Europe usually depends on people using their native languages.

Please contact the Board (europe@conbio.org) if you would like to form a local SCB Chapter! As Raphael Arlettaz, Chair of the Membership Committee wrote: "The Section leadership is keen to assist you in planning, organising, publicising and executing your plans, and we will seek to provide support to turn these plans into a success. We also hope that this will boost conservation activity, provide new avenues of discussion and collaboration, increase the membership in the Society and bridge the science-implementation gap in biodiversity conservation."

ECCB2012 - updates - abstract submission deadline

We are delighted to have received 700 abstracts for ECCB 2012.
As we have capacity for a large number of oral and poster presentations at our venue in Glasgow,  we would like to encourage additional abstracts from those who have not yet had the chance to submit.  We have therefore decided to extend the deadline for submissions to the 31st January 2012.
We would encourage our colleagues from mainland Europe to join us on the western fringe!

Grassland insects - ECCB2009 Symposium Special Issue has just been published

A Special Issue on grassland insects in the journal Insect Conservation & Diversity has just been published online. This Special Issue arose from a symposium held at the previous ECCB 2009 in Prague.  We are looking forward to the next ECCB in Glasgow to have more symposium publications.

Policy-briefs contest and exhibition at ECCB2012

ECCB2012 innovates!
An exhibition of professional policy-briefs, as well as a contest open to any participant, will be organised during this meeting in Glasgow (28/08 - 01/09, 2012). All the details about what a policy-brief is and the requirements for registration and format can be found at: www.eccb2012.org/policy-brief.asp.
This is a great opportunity for all those who are interested in communicating scientific results to decision and policy-makers to discover and learn about this interesting media. It is also a chance to meet those professional who already use them, and benefit from their advice. Finally, running for the prize(s) is a way to show that not only are you a conservation scientist, but also a good writer and possibly a knowledge broker.
UNESCO, the British Ecological Society have also accepted to contribute and much more are still to come as member of the Jury, exhibitors and sponsors. So far we have a sum of money and the opportunity to publish the winner's brief in a well_known journal, but more prizes or opportunities may be offered soon. More details will be put on the webpage with the progression of the logistics and partnerships.
Participating to this event does not require any submission of abstract or extra registration fees. Nevertheless, to organise the event and keep you informed of any advancement (especially new prizes), please contact Barbara Livoreil at barbara.livoreil@gmail.com.
